In order to determine the floristics of epiphytic diatoms found on Macrocystis pyrifera blades, four fronds were collected monthly from February to August, 2003, from a kelp bed located in front of El Sauzal de Rodríguez, Ensenada, B.C. A total of 171 diatom taxa were identified (including species, varieties and forms), from 62 genera. Differences in species richness by frond were observed for the same date, and were even larger between fronds from different dates. Because of the high species richness of epiphytic diatoms observed, and the dietary preference by abalone (Haliotis spp.) for M. pyrifera in the wild and inculture, the need for considering the contribution of epiphytic diatoms to the abalone diet becomes evident.
