The house is a reflection and translator of the Russian material and spiritual culture: in addition to its main purpose, it expresses national traditions and the people’s way of life. This paper deals with the names for house and its parts in the Arkhangelsk Region dialects as well as introduces local names for other buildings and structures. The aim of the study is to perform an ethnographic analysis of architectural and construction vocabulary included in the thematic group “General names for house and parts of the living quarters”. Original dialect materials collected during dialectological expeditions in the Arkhangelsk Region over the past 50 years (since the early 1960s) are analysed. The author reveals similarities and differences in lexical meanings according to the geographical principle and compares vocabulary used in different districts of the region. Each word is provided with a definition from the context and illustrations. Furthermore, the paper traces the etymological meanings of these words and shows that almost all of them are of Common Slavic origin. A word-formation analysis demonstrates that these lexemes are derived from words denoting an object, a place, a person or an attribute. According to historical and etymological dictionaries, the vocabulary under study had been actively used by Russians over many centuries and can still be found in the northern parts of the Arkhangelsk Region.
