The article reveals the theoretical prerequisites for constructing the human development index. The features of the formation of the methodology for calculating this indicator are shown. An assessment of the main trends in the dynamics of the human development index in Russia and in the world for the period 2010 - 2018 is given. A comparative analysis of private indices of human development in Russia by federal districts is carried out. The analysis of statistical data made it possible to draw a conclusion about the health of the nation as the weakest link in the structure of the qualitative characteristics of the population of Russia.
