
Types of traditional marriage among Tuvans in China at the beginning of the XXI century

In the enclave culture of modern Chinese Tuvans, traditional marriage has two well-established forms: collusion and abduction. The article discusses the main prohibitions to choosing a marriage partner, the principles of exogamy, and describes the structure of a collusive marriage, which consists of three main stages of matchmaking and wedding feasts held separately by the parents of the bride and groom. The main elements of a marriage with stealing and the reasons for its existence are described; the marriage agreement of young children that existed among the Chinese Tuvans until the middle of the XX century. The article is based on the author’s field materials collected among Tuvans in China during of field seasons in 2010–2018.
