The article is devoted to the process of formation and development of ethnographic research as one of the main forms of work of the Altai Territory museums in the 1920s-1980s. By the example of Biysk Local History Museum named after Vitaly Bianki, the directions, forms and problems of studying the ethnic groups of Altai in the given period are identified, the methodology and the main results of ethnographic research are characterized. The issues of the influence of personal interest and creative contacts on the results of professional activity of the museum staff are considered. The study showed that the formation of Biysk Local History Museum named after Vitaly Bianchi as a regional center for the study of the ethnic groups of Altai became possible thanks to the active and professional activities of the staff, especially, B.H. Kadikov.
