The article raises the question of the status of the epithet, which ambiguously fits into the theory of tropes, since it does not always have a figurative meaning. Based on the analysis, we propose our own interpretation of the epithet, which allows us to classify epithets-elocutives with a focus on the features of their functional pragmatics, as well as its typology
