Background: Facial nerve palsy can haveophthalmological, Otological, rhinological, taste, and swallowing consequences, in addition to thepsychological impact of altered facial expression.Electrical Stimulation (ES) is one of the mostdebatable and non-evidence-based adjunctivetherapies for facial palsy.MATERIAL/METHODSWe retrieved the literature on ES in facial nerveinjury using the Cochrane Database of SystematicReviews, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Emphasiswas placed on articles and randomised controlledtrials (RCTs) published within the last 20 years. Results: The reviewed studies, clinical trials andsystematic reviews did not support ES due to alack of quality evidence to support significantb e n e fi t o r h a r m fr o m E S . T h e v a ri e dmethodologies used and the small number ofsubjects included in the studies could not whollyprove the efficacy of electrotherapy for treatingfacial nerve injury. CONCLUSIONT h o u g h m a n y s t u d i e s h a v e r e p o rt e dimprovement of facial movement or functionfollowing ES for facial nerve injury, substantialevidence supporting the use of ES in facial palsy islacking; well-designed rigorous research isrequired.KEYWORDSElectrical Stimulation, Facial Nerve Palsy, FacialParalysis
