In this article, the author examines the historical and legal foundations of interaction between the police and the population during the Great Patriotic War. An attempt is made to analyze and systematize the forms used in the organization of interaction between police officers and members of state-public formations during the study period, the author comes to the conclusion that preference was given to collective forms in the organization of interaction between the population and the police, and the choice of forms of interaction was carried out taking into account a number of factors that can affect the results of activities. The participation of the population in the composition of public-state formations in various forms of interaction with the police was the key to success in the activities of the police in the struggle to ensure law and order and the stability of the rear.
