There is however potential for morbidity and even mortality ifproper and timely treatment is not provided. The standardtreatment of liver abscess is the use of appropriate antibioticsand supportive care. Needle aspiration can be used as anadditional mode of therapy and has been promoted by someauthors for routine use in the treatment of uncomplicated liverabscess. It is suggested that needle aspiration can improveresponse to antibiotics treatment, reduce hospital stay and thetotal cost of treatment. Although USG guided needleaspiration is fairly safe, it is nonetheless an invasiveprocedure requiring the passage of a wide bore needle in to ahighly vascular organ, and can be associated with the risk ofbleeding. Needle aspirations, especially at the time ofintervention has therefore remained a debatable issue and itseems important to determine its possible role in thetreatment of liver abscess.
