This paper aims to explore some of the current theoretical andmethodological trends employed in the analysis of metaphors in religiousdiscourse under the umbrella of Cognitive Linguistics. First, this studyreviews a series of theoretical tenets of Cognitive Linguistics towards thestudy of literary texts, namely Cognitive Stylistics and Multimodality. Then, some of the most important studies of metaphors in religiousscriptures are reviewed within three contexts: Judeo-Christian, Islamic andBuddhist. Finally, some proposals for the methodological analysis ofmetaphors in religious texts are presented. Ultimately, we argue thatevolution from traditional cognitivist analyses (following IdealizedCognitive Models) towards multimodal analyses of metaphors is necessaryto obtain a more holistic image of the events.
