Digital image processing is a boon in medical image processing. Oral hygiene is considered as one of the main aspect of the health. So, it is important to determine the dental diseases and cure them. This leads to use of technologies that help in detecting the diseases. Dental imaging technologies have seen a rapid advancement over a century. The image capturing technologies have evolved from analog films to 2D imaging and recent 3D imaging technologies are now in vogue. Detection of dental diseases by using dental imaging techniques still possess some challenges, inappropriate use of techniques can lead to undesired results. In this paper we will look at various dental imaging technologies that are used for detection of dental diseases and the associated challenges.
