Social innovations are an integral part of both innovative development and the evolution of socio-economic systems, which has led to a rapid growth of interest in social innovations in the scientific literature, as well as among practitioners. At the same time, a complete confusion of approaches, concepts and laws of different disciplines, due to the lack of disclosure and misunderstanding of both the category of “social innovations” and the emergence of the theory of social innovations, exacerbated the need to define the historical background for the development of this concept. The purpose of this study is to systematize theoretical developments on the formation and development of the theory of social innovations. To achieve the goal of this study, a retrospective analysis of this phenomenon and systematization of the existing theoretical and methodological provisions for the study of social innovations were made; modern approaches to the consideration of social innovations were allocated. The presented research results show the key role of social innovations in the development of socio-economic systems, despite the rather short period of its existence as an independent theoretical concept.
