The article concerns the problem of rationalizing the speech genre of apology. The following features of the latter are discussed: etiquette; institutional character; rhetorical character; public nature; cultural specificity. The value parameter serves as a ground for establishing the features of public apology in American top-management (presidential) discourse. Description is given to the pragmalinguistic features of B.J. Clinton’s public apology televised nationwide on 17.08.1998, specifically, to its super-structure and to its strategic-tactical content. The latter is represented by two macro-strategies and by five strategies of non-uniform nature.
