The article is devoted to the complex research in the field of essential characteristics of precedent phenomena. Despite seeming stereotype precedent phenomena are characterized with a lot of distinguishing features. These features help to differentiate between precedent units and other language phenomena of similar nature, reveal the complexity of precedent phenomena’s structure and determine the specificity of their functioning in discourse. The author of the article emphasized sixteen main characteristic features of precedent phenomena: personification, direct associativity, nationally determined minimized representation, invariance, renown, relevance, constant repeatability in speech, reproducibility of content, axiologicity, being a model, valuation, marking, cliche presence, integrity of perception, metaphors and reinterpretability. All characteristic features are interconnected. They let precedent phenomena be classified as a kind of complex multi-aspect knowledge.
