The article deals with semantic processes actively occurring in modern Russian language connected with widening and narrowing of the meaning of the word “stylist”. Numerous contexts are presented and analyzed. These contexts were taken from the National corpus of the Russian language. Scientists consider that nomination “stylist” begins to denote the wider duties “the master of beauty” can perform. These duties turn him into a specialist of a wider profile or a higher level. Andreas Blank, having analyzed causes of semantic shift, comes to the conclusion that they can be linguistic, psychological, sociocultural and cultural. It is possible to say that first processes of widening and then of narrowing of the meaning of the word “stylist”, most likely, were caused by a set of the reasons specified by Blank. The author of the article pays attention to the fact that professional groups of internet community can use the noun “stylist” for self-presentation and in order to improve their own skills. The author also considers that this word starts taking pragmatic connotations becoming fashionable and prestigious. Therefore often the profession of a stylist and the word itself, denoting this profession, get an ironic interpretation.
