This article considers silence as an indispensable prerequisite for listening, a receptive type of speech activity. The study is based on the day-to-day discourse. This article explores dialogues with horizontal and vertical, as well as hierarchical types of interaction that determine the features of silence functioning in them. In communicative science they distinguish active, empathic and passive listening depending on the communicant’s intention, his/her attitude to the speaker’s point of view and status. The purpose of this work is to identify the most frequent combinations of silence with other elements of communication that can act as markers of one or another type of communication. Such combinations of null and materially expressed markers led us to conclusion that the type of listening corresponds to the type of constructive speech behavior - politeness or tolerance.
