A tradition found in the Ṣaḥīḥ of Muslim (d. 875) states that the Prophet Muḥammad told his companions, “O people, turn to God in tawba. Verily, I engage in tawba with Him one hundred times a day.” Many similar reports are scattered throughout the ḥadīth corpus, with one pertinent tradition even stating that the Prophet went so far as to christen himself the nabī al-tawba, that is, the “prophet of tawba.”
