Kota Kinabalu is one of the famous tourist destinations in the state of Sabah. This city also a starting point for most tourist circuits in this state. Therefore, this study is related to the travel tourist circuit patterns in Kota Kinabalu. There are three objectives set in this study, namely (i) identify the travel planning of the respondents, (ii) examine the pattern of tourist circuit in Kota Kinabalu and (iii) examine the pattern of tourist circuit outside of Kota Kinabalu. The study design used is a survey approach by applying quantitative methods as research methods. A total of 228 respondents who are backpackers in Kota Kinabalu answered the questionnaire in this study. The data analysis used is by using GIS software. The findings of the study found that the tourist circuit of backpackers in Kota Kinabalu is limited and heavily influenced by popular destinations visited by mass tourists who come to this district. In short, travel tourism has a high potential to grow and become one of the types of tourism that is the identity of the tourism sector in Kota Kinabalu. Hence, the government and related parties should increase efforts to promote travel tourism in Kota Kinabalu to the international level.
