The Malays use their creativity and ingenuity to convey the sense of the taboo. Taboo is a discipline that was delivered orally by Malay tradition and passed down from generation to generation. Taboo is also one of the ways for the ancient society to convey advice and teaching politely and serve as a tool of social control in society. The purpose of this paper is to identify elements of animals and analyze the functions of animals in Malay taboos. Animals selected because it is very close to the community and is widely used in Malay taboos. This paper uses the book Pantang Larang Orang Tua-tua kepada Anak Cucunya (1948) which was maintained by Muhamad Dato Muda published by Malay Press, Kuala Pilah as the study text. This paper uses the Premonition approach under the Naturally Methodology base on the theory of Malay Studies by Hashim Awang (1989). The approach of this paper draws on to the questions of how taboos became the belief of the society and what is the function of animals in Malay taboos. The functions of animals in Malay taboos can be seen based on these questions. This understanding and appreciation can be used as a guide in daily life, especially in interactions or relationships among members of society. This process ultimately meets the goal of the Theory of Malay Studies which is to achieve virtue, piety, and decency. Among other findings concluded that the animal serves as a sign of familiarity with the nature of the Malay community in turn leads to the spirit as a guide and a symbol of the intelligent Malay community in Malay taboos.
