The paper outlines in the historical aspect the stages of formation and development of the StateSanitary and Epidemiological Service of Russia. For more than 95-year history of the State Sanitaryand Epidemiological Service it was focused on the task of monitoring the sanitary and epidemiologicalsituation, the reduction of general and infectious morbidity, improvement of working and livingconditions of the population, preventing the spread of dangerous infections, the elimination ofharmful factors in the external environment, promotion of hygiene knowledge, the formation of thescientific base for diagnosis and treatment of infections. At the moment the leading role in thispreventive work plays the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service.
