The analysis of published data on cleaning and activation of welded surfaces during pressure welding in the solid phase has been carried out. A new understanding of cleaning and activation processes during explosion welding of large-sized sheets is proposed. It is based on the impact of the shock plasma, which arises during hypersonic shock-compressed gas flow around the welded surfaces.
