This article analyzes the relevance of unionism based on the fluctuations of unionization in OECD member countries and some Latin American countries, as well as its impact on contemporary Mexico. The origins of unions as essential organizations for the defense of the labor rights of unionized workers are examined, as well as their role as political actors. In addition, union density is described and analyzed to measure the power and influence of unions in the political and labor spheres. Fluctuations in union density in a group of OECD countries between 1980 and 2018 are taken into account. This allows us to observe variations in union density over the period of neoliberal globalization and to determine which countries have experienced booms and busts in unionization rates.
