The notions "family as a social system", "family as a social institution", "family as a small social group" have been compared in the article, differences and reasons of studying of foster family as a special small social group have been singled out. Characteristics of family composition connected with its viability with emphasis on family typology in terms of distinction of family structures are analysed. Characteristics significantly affecting formation of viability of family and of each family member are singled out.
