The article deals with events in the life of Kostroma eparchy in early March 1917, previously not analysed in totality and connected with the establishment of a new format of state-church relationship. The author formulates the thesis about the rejection of monarchic idea by the majority of Orthodox clergy after the February Revolution which was not due to revolutionary views of clergymen, but on the contrary, due to their conservative commitment to Synodal model of the position of the church in the state . It is noted that the level of public activity of various groups of clergy in the conditions of revolutionary time could be directly proportional to the extent of their integration into the state-bureaucratic system. As examples, the author describes the actions of Kostroma clergymen on the establishment of the order of liturgical commemoration of the authorities for religious services on 3rd to 5th of March,1917, and the participation of the clergy in the celebrations of "holiday of freedom" on March 10, 1917, in Kostroma. The article contains information which was not published in diocesan press earlier, i.e. about the conflict of the Vicar of Kostroma eparchy, the Bishop of Kineshma Sebastian with Kineshma revolutionary Committee ofpublic security (the Bishop was accused of monarchic propaganda; the problem managed to be completely solved only in September, 1917).
