In the article we talk about the review of the fi rst personal Vasily Vereshchagin’s paintings exhibition, that was devoted to Imperial Russia's Central Asian territories and held in 1874 in St. Petersburg. Vsevolod Krestovsky, the well-known fi ction writer, journalist and a contemporary of Vasily Vereshchagin, offered his understanding of the life of the Asian people reproduced by a talented painter who begins the triumphal march around the world. Vsevolod Krestovsky's review is fi lled with both enthusiasm for the mastery of the artist’s work and criticism about the desirability of detailing the representation of the exotic world. Taking into account the importance of the exhibition of Vasily Vereshchagin's canvases for the development of the artistic taste of the younger generation, Vsevolod Krestovsky, nevertheless, did not fail to note the dubious nature of the detailing of the battle, often causing confusion and possible false conclusions from the viewer.
