The impressive collection of Portuguese books and manuscripts that Lord Holland collected throughout his long and rewarding life, is probably one of the strongest evidence of his affection to Portugal. The Portuguese section at the Holland House Library was often consulted by several celebrated authors like Robert Southey, John Adamson, Morgado de Mateus and perhaps even Almeida Garrett, the reputed founder of Portuguese Romanticism. This article contributes to the study of Lord Holland’s Portuguese Library, from the perspectiveof the history of books and libraries, and also investigates the importance of this Library to the study and diffusion of Portuguese culture and literature in England in the first half of the nineteenth century
