The process of introducing innovations into the activities of various economic structures with the use of information and communication technologies is considered. The characteristic features of the term «innovation» are studied on the basis of the analysis of different author’s approaches. The main functions and components of subsystems of innovative activity are revealed. The main problems of introducing innovations in information and communication systems associated with the low level of state support and the weak development of already known technologies are highlighted. The main directions of development and improvement of information and communication technologies in Russia are presented.
