Engaged Anthropology: How Writing Becomes PoliticalEngaged anthropology encompasses several layers of practising anthropology as a discipline: from rethinking elementary writing methods and techniques in order to establish a post-colonial relation to the research topic, finding a non-imperialist political position, and working with communities to challenge hierarchical and patronising relationships. Engagement encourages the maintenance of dual loyalty: to one’s profession and the academic community, and to the political struggle in which one engages. The existing tension between utopian ideals, well-established academic ethics and the practical use of gained knowledge and involvement enriches activist/scientificresearch.Key words: engaged anthropology, activism, advocacy, community work.
