Amyloidosis is a disease process characterized by generalized or localized extracellular deposition of proteinacious material, amyloid. Amyloid is made up of straight, long, unbranching fibrils that stains positive with Congo red and exhibits apple-green birefringence in cross-polarized light. The tongue is usuallyinvolved insystemic amyloidosis.
