In 1866, when Mendel was carrying out hispea plant experiments in the monastery, nobodycould predict what was to come. A genius whoseideas were appreciated after 34 years of theirdiscovery, quite literally planted the seeds for thegenetics that we’re familiar with, today. Theimportant breakthrough was the completion of TheHuman Genome Project in 2003, which meant thatscientists now had the genetic dictionary in theirhands for an in-depth review of DNA andassociated mutations. Eventually, the picturestarted to become clearer and our earlierspeculation about the role of family history andenvironment in genetic disorders, now hadconcrete proof. The modern-day geneticist aims to identify, diagnose, and treat gene related conditions moreefficiently than ever. This article surveys thedifferent ways in which genetic disorders manifestthemselves, their causative mutations, as well asearly detection and treatment
