
ESTABLISHMENT AND OPERATION OF ACADEMIC BANK OF CREDITS (ABC) IN HIGHER EDUCATION

The NEP, 2020 reiterates the holistic andmultidisciplinary education. Even engineeringinstitutions, such as IITs, will move towards moreholistic and multidisciplinary education with more artsand humanities. The Academic Bank of Credits (ABCs)shall be a national-level facility to promote flexibility ofcurriculum framework and interdisciplinary academicmobility of students across HEIs with appropriate credittransfer mechanism. It will enable the integration ofmultiple disciplines of higher learning, leading to thedesired outcomes including enhanced creativity,innovation, higher order thinking and critical analysis.Academic Bank of Credits is essentially a credit-based,and highly flexible, student-centric facility. Students areeligible for Credit transfer, Credit accrual and Creditredemption through ABCs. The present articleenlighten the readers with regard to Objectives of ABCs; Functions of ABCs ; Organizational Structures ofABCs ; Implementation Plan for ABCs ; and EligibilityCriteria for HEIs to register with ABCs. TheRegulations presented in this article are called as theUniversity Grants Commission (Establishment andOperation of Academic Bank of Credits in HigherEducation) Regulations, 2021 which will be implementedfrom the academic year 2021-22.
