Principal Leadership is a globally discussedconcept in the education sector and by the governments.Apparently, instructional leadership has gained popularityworldwide among many other leadership styles. It plays animportant role in quality education and school effectiveness.Hence, the study has been undertaken to understand theprevailing leadership practices, and determine commoninstructional leadership practices with an additional focuson the factors or challenges of instructional leadershippractices of the principals.The study has been carried out in WangduephodrangDistrict with a total respondents principals and teachers of76. The data was collected through a mixed method, usingthe purposive sampling method. Semi-structuredquestionnaires and one to one interviews were used in thestudy. The data was analysed using Statistical Package forSocial Sciences (SPSS) version 22 and used to drawdescriptive statistics and inferential reports. Further thedata were also analysed using the Pearson correlation test.The quantitative data were interpreted through narrationto support the quantitative results.Some of the key findings were, instructional leadershippractices of the principals were found to be inadequate,principals concentrating on managerial roles anddelegating supervisory responsibilities to staff. Some majorissues faced were numerous roles and responsibilities givento principals, shortage of teachers, inadequate instructionalresponsibilities, and lack of time and leadership training.Accordingly, the authors share a few recommendations tothe relevant stakeholders and agencies for learning anddevelopment purposes.
