Underground coal gasification (UCG)is a process to use and convert deep andeconomically un-mineable coal into syngas forfurther use in electric power, liquid fuels andsynthetic natural gas etc. Underground Coalgasification is a very promising option for thefuture use of coal present in INDIA. This paperprovides a summary of the UCG description andits selection criteria. The current status of thistechnology in various countries are also beendiscussed. Finally, the potential of UCG as ameans for producing syngas from un-mineabledeep sited coal has been discussed and itschallenges as well as opportunities involved.
