- Pumps and turbines are an integral part ofthe hydro machine family and play a vital role in manylarge industries. These machines are required to operateefficiently for the maximum output, and thus they mustbe free from any damages or problems. Cavitation is aphenomenon occurring in hydro machines (morespecifically, pumps and turbines) which is related to thechange and fluctuation in the pressure of fluids, thesame phenomenon further leads to cavitation erosion. Itturns out to be disadvantageous for the machines anddeteriorates their performance and efficiency. Thispaper consists of a detailed study about thephenomenon, including how can we detect the damageand root of the problem. Further, their causes arediscussed with the ways of prevention. This will help intaking necessary measures from the beginning so thatthe problems with the machines can be avoided.
