Concentrations of numerous hormones decrease with age. Someauthors imply that a syndrome of partial endocrine deficiencymay occur in the aging men. Among many lifestyle factors thatinfluence hormonal status is physical activity. Especiallyinteresting are relations between physical activity and theandrogenic/estrogenic status of men. The aim of this study wasto evaluate age-related changes of serum androgens, estradioland SHBG in men presenting different levels of physical activity.Hormonal parameters were measured in a cohort of 387 healthyCaucasian men (aged from 24 to 72 years) from oneadministrative region of Poland. Their level of physical activitywas determined by means of the International Physical ActivityQuestionnaire (IPAQ). We have found that contrary to SHBGconcentration, total testosterone, free testosterone, bioavailabletestosterone, calculated free testosterone and estradiol werenegatively associated with age in the investigated subjects. Apartfrom estradiol, physical activity did not influence concentrationsof the studied parameters. In younger (24-48 years), physicallyactive males estradiol was significantly higher than in subjectscharacterized by a low level of physical activity. The situation wasopposite in older males (48-72 years). In this age group low levelof physical activity was associated with lower concentration ofestradiol. Undertaking physical effort increased the decline ofestradiol level with age.
