Tissue factor is a cell surface protein that is expressedconstitutively by monocytes, macrophages and fibroblasts, butalso by some other cells in response to a variety of stimuli. Themain function of the tissue factor is to form a complex with factorVII/VIIa that converts factors IX and X to their active forms.Tissue factor is also involved in the pathophysiology of systemicinflammatory disorders, coagulopathies, atherosclerotic disease,tumor angiogenesis and metastasis. Increased tissue factorexpression either locally in the coronary plaques or systematicallyon circulating blood elements of patients with acute coronarysyndromes may be responsible for increased thrombingeneration, thus leading to platelet activation and fibrinformation. Tissue factor therefore plays a pivotal role in theinitiation of thrombotic complications in patients with coronaryartery disease.
