The karyotype and external morphology of the larva, pupa and female of Chironomus clarus are described here for the first time. Cytologically C. clarus belongs to the thummi complex (chromosome arm combination: AB CD EF G). On the basis of external morphology and karyotype this species should be combined with C. obtusidens Goetghebuer and C. acutiventris Wtilker, Ryser & Scholl in the obtusidens group. C. clarus and C. obtusidens are homosequental sister species (if not even synonyms) with one and the same band sequences. Completions of the male morphology are also given and the species is compared with members of the obtusidens group.
