This paper describes the teaching of Tamil language in Mauritius at all levels from a historical perspective. The main sources of this paper were based on books and acquired experience in the teaching of Tamil. The essay is written in a descriptive mode and quantitative mode. The research shows that there are lots of problems and challenges in the teaching of Tamil in a diasporic country like Mauritius. It is very imperative to ponder on problems such as scarcity area, decrease in the number of students and examination results. Besides problems loaded syllabus, lack of support from parents are the few challenges that would be discussed in this paper and some solutions will be enumerated to curb those problems and challenges.
