The success of the security transition in Afghanistan depends on the capacity of the Afghan National Security Forces. The NATO Literacy project is critical for the deve- lopment of a capable and professional force, since it cannot be professionalized if its members do not have the basic ability to read and write. The elimination of illiteracy is therefore not only a necessity but also an added value, contributing importantly to a better future for the young generations of Afghans, raised under a regime, where the access to education was highly limited. Members of the Slovenian Armed Forces (SAF) also took part in the project and the aim of this article is to present their role and their field experience. Literacy training is a completely noncontroversial way of cooperation, which is essential for the long term stability of Afghanistan and represents the usefulness of the armed forces in the society. However, it does not represent an immediate conflict resolution. Despite the improvement of conditions, the overall security situation remains fragile and represents the main obstacle for progress.
