Contrary to other methods of tafsir commonly applied and acknowledged by the Muslims, tafsir al-ishari extends beyond the literal meaning of the Arabic language, which is the language of the Quran. If not properly done within the stipulated conditions, it could confuse and mislead people from the true meanings of the Quran. As such, this paper delves into al-Shatibi's position on tafsir al-ishari and its rules of adoption. In particular, it focused on discussing his views on tafsir al-ishari as adopted by some Sufis and comparing it to the exegesis of the Batiniyyah. This results in a clearer understanding of the acceptable form of tafsir al-ishari as understood and practiced by Muslims.
