The article examines the specifics and functions of the object detail in the story of A.P. Chekhov “Ionych”. The article reveals the role of object detailing in the creation of meaningful oppositions for the ideological and artistic structure of the work: “movement – rest”, “house – garden”, “reality – illusion”. Being an important element of Chekhov’s poetics, the material detail acts both as a means of “objectifying” a person, thus emphasizing his loss of the spiritual principle, and as a kind of sign-characteristic of the inner state of heroes, substituting illusion for real life. The proposed way of analyzing the story of A. P. Chekhov can be used when considering other works of art.
