How can we use documentary films to teach history ? This article proposes to think the film medium with Peirce’s pragmatic semiology. This theory opens on the plurality of interpretants, depending on the situation of communication. The distinction between iconic and index signs helps to distinguish between different types of images: are they historical sources or reconstructions, or even purely fictional representations?
