This paper explores how gender performance inthe freak show grew into the modern drag sceneas we know it today. By examining some of themodern elements of drag, it is possible to see howthese performers circumvented the laws, prejudices, and discrimination aimed towards them tocreate a booming industry where drag queensappear on national television and are treated withthe respect that they had previously been denied.
