The Village Nègre, one of the largest exhibitsin the 1889 World’s Fair, was home to over fourhundred indigenous people from various Frenchcolonies. Throughout this paper, the authorsdiscuss how the Village Nègre was used by theFrench to draw a line between the “civilized” andthe “savage.” The Village also served as a form ofcolonialist propaganda while further establishingEuropean dominance.
