The article dwells on the landmark event history which opened up the transitional period of popular democracy and Soviet-style political regime in Bulgaria. Estimates of what happened on the 9th of September 1944 have varied depending on situation. Up until the collapse of the communist regime in November 1989, they remained within the official ideological framework. Our time, while opening up the possibility of an unbiased historical research, generates a temptation of new myth-making.
