Conventional sources of fuels such as diesel and petroleum are threatening to the global climate. They are non-renewable and highly toxic sources of energy which are depleting at an alarming rate due to their high demand. Thus, there is an urgent requirement for alternate sources. Many such renewable, less toxic, and inexpensive solutions are available, including biodiesel from macroalgae. Algal cells contain 50% intracellular lipids in them which plays an important role in their use as a substrate for production of biodiesel. Oscillatoria is a genus of one such Blue Green Algae (BGA) usually found floating on the surface of fresh water sources such as pond, lakes, rivers and streams.
