
PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY AS AN ADJUNCT TO SCALING AND ROOT PLANING IN CHRONIC PERIODONTITIS PATIENTS: A SPLIT MOUTH CLINICO MICROBIOLOGICAL STUDY

Photodynamic therapy (PDT), which involves the use of low power lasers with appropriate wavelength to kill cells or microorganisms previously treated with a photosensitizer drug.1 The aim of the present study was to assess the efficacy of photodynamic (PDT) as an adjunct to non –surgical periodontal therapy (SRP) for the treatment of chronic periodontitis. Materials &Method: A split mouth design was used in A total of 20 patients (as per the criteria laid down for selection), 3quadrents were selected in each patient and divided in to three groups. Group A: Received Photodynamic Therapy by means of 0.5% indocyanine green and irradiated by Laser after scaling and root planing. Group B: Received scaling and root planing. Group C: Received laser therapy. The clinical readings and the microbial analysis were done at base line, 1 month and 3 months from the 1st visit. The pre and post-operative values of all parameters were subjected to statistical analysis. Conclusion: PDT+SRP group showed additional improvement than the SRP groups in all parameters were as the results were low in LASER alone group.
