Defining the connotations of scientific concepts is the prerequisite for any scholarly project that follows. “Hán học” (Sinology) and “Trung Quốc học” (Chinese Studies) are two concepts alternatively employed, and seemingly taken as identical to some extent in Vietnam. In fact, the circle of international scholars has come up with quite clear-cut definitions for the two concepts in question. Based on this foundation, scholars have established two distinct disciplines with significant achievements for each. Such a distinction reflects strategic scholarly views in scientific disciplinary development. Depending on the strength and concrete demands of an academic institution, either Sinology or Chinese Studies will be selected to be the focal point of development. Interdisciplinary by nature and influenced by the research paradigm prevailing within a nation, Sinology and Chinese Studies both require the collaboration of various scientific disciplines. Sinology and Chinese Studies in Vietnam are now facing a huge gap that separates them from the circle of international scholars. Bridging the gap has undoubtedly become an urgent demand, and positioning Vietnam’s Sinology/Chinese Studies in the map of international scholarly achievements must be founded on the awareness of the upuntil-now development history of the discipline within and outside Vietnam. Research on China in relation to Vietnam from a comparative perspective always remains an advantage and great potential of Vietnamese Sinology/Chinese Studies. The model of IndoSinology may stand out as a suggestion for the development of Viet-Sinology in Vietnam.
