The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on December 18, 1979. Although eleven Arab countries have ratified the Convention, they have also expressed reservations pertaining to women's rights in the family. This hesitation or unwillingness to adopt the convention wholeheartedly is attributed to the incompatibility of these articles with the Islamic sharia and their non-conformity with national laws and legislation.
