Though there are many signs in Hanan Al-Shaykh’s novel Hikayati sharhun yatul that it is the (auto)biography of Kamila, the author’s mother, the form the book takes is noteworthy. The author of the (auto)biography is not the person who wrote the book, she was the one who narrated all her life’s details to her daughter in lively colloquial language, and gave her the letters she received from her beloved Mohamed.
